Burn Remedies
Quick application of effective burn remedies can go a long way to reduce a burn's painful and debilitating effects.
Whether it's a burn from an accident around the house or a sunburn from a day at the beach, it's good to know some first aid for burns. Burns are classified as either first, second, or third degree. Most sunburns would be considered first-degree. Typically, the burns you might experience in the kitchen are first degree, too. A burn with blisters would be second-degree. A third-degree burn affects even the tissue underlying the skin and needs immediate medical attention. We have found our therapeutic essential oils to be very effective in dealing with the first and second-degree burns we have experienced.

Essential Oils and Burn Remedies I attribute the good success we have had with burn care to lavender essential oil and a spray called LavaDerm. (The Lavender Hand & Body Lotion I have has also been helpful.)LavaDerm is a mix of re-structured water, aloe vera, and trace mineral complex combined with lavender. When sprayed on a burn, this mist does an excellent job providing relief and promoting the healing of burns. Because of this, I see lavender and LavaDerm at the forefront of the burn remedies I may choose. Other oils that have brought relief from burns are Idaho balsam fir, helichrysum, cypress and German chamomile. Rose oil (and ointment) can promote healing of the skin when it begins to dry and crack from a burn.
First Aid for Burns As a busy mother it seems that I get my share of burns. One of these I'll never forget. . . I was using my curling iron, and somehow the cord twisted in such a way that it pulled the curling iron completely around. When I went to grab it, while looking in the mirror, I grasped the hot end of the curling iron and lifted it up to my head. It took just a second to realize what I did -- OUCH! I had a large blister on my hand immediately, and it was the most painful burn I've ever had. It felt like my hand was literally on fire. I saturated the area with LavaDerm Spray. Then, I doused it with lavender oil. After a little while I mixed a few drops of lavender oil with lavender lotion and coated the affected area. After this last step, the pain subsided significantly. Within an hour the pain was essentially gone. The next morning there was no redness or pain, and only a small blister remained to remind of the incident. I've taken a similar approach to other burns as well, and found that various lavender products used in combination provide ideal first aid for burns.
Sunburn Remedy The best way to deal with sunburn and the need for a sun burn remedy is to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. You already knew that, right? So, what do you do when you need some first aid for sunburn because you happened to be in the sun too long? My preference again is for lavender oil and Lavaderm Spray. Together they do a great job bringing about the cooling and moisturizing needed to relieve pain and promote healing. I know of one young lady who ended up looking like a lobster from her day at the beach. The thing that bothered her most about this is that she had a big event to attend the next day and was embarrassed to go all red. So, for a sunburn remedy, she applied a layer of lavender, followed a few minutes by a layer of peppermint. The next day the sunburn was gone and everything was cool! Something that I especially like about using essential oils for excessive sun exposure is that they provide a natural sunburn remedy. Who wants to smear some toxic lotion on on an organ as big and absorbent as their skin? I don't.
It is not surprising that essential oils can serve as such excellent burn remedies. After all, the modern history of essential oils began when a French chemist, Rene Gattefosse, discovered that lavender oil healed his hand without a scar after he was burned by an explosion in his laboratory.First aid for burns at home has become much more effective with the availability of therapeutic-grade essential oils. Important Note: There is a hybrid lavender available called Lavandin. While Lavandin has properties similar to lavender and is highly antiseptic, DO NOT use it for burns as it may create an even greater burning sensation.
